DIGITal gateway for low ACCESSible heritage architectures

PNRR M4C2: PRIN 2022

Acronimo: DIGIT-ACCESS

Descrizione

The conservative restoration and planned maintenance of the historical built heritage with low accessibility pose multifaceted challenges for the processes of knowledge, diagnosis and assessment, where the difficulties of integrating and complementing heterogeneous data acquired with different methods of diagnostic investigation and monitoring for their operational use become even more challenging.

In this context, a paradigm shift is driven by digital solutions, also usable in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality environments, in order to enable understanding the geometric-dimensional and material-constructive characteristics of architectural assets, as well as the semantic enrichment with informative contents and digital products deriving from documentary, analytical and experimental sources, and the real-time remote acquisition of data from on-site monitoring sensors.

In this regard, the research aims to test and validate a set of operational protocols and digital tools for the use of reality-based environments and models toward implementation and querying of diagnostic data from experimental investigations and analytical processing, on-desk control of real-time on-site data from environmental and structural sensor networks, application of image-processing routines and machine learning methods for identification of degradation patterns, visualization of informative contents and digital products by VR/AR environments. The result is a DIGITal gateway to support processes of knowledge, diagnosis, and evaluation of heritage, with particular attention to low ACCESSible architectures, validating it on representative case studies of underground architectures in Southern Italy.
