The heritage of the structures in the Jordan archaeological sites:

construction, conservation and enhancement

Descrizione

Umm ar-Rasas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. The Roman military utilized the site as a strategic garrison, but it was later converted and inhabited by Christian and Islamic communities.

The project, acknowledged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, is divided into the following activities:

  • survey and monitoring of the structural degradation and of the seismic vulnerability of the Stylite Tower (a pillar on top of which Christian ascetic lived preaching, fasting, and praying), the Roman Castrum, and the vaulted structures of the Karak Castle (Crusader stronghold, and later Mamluk fortress);
  • modelling and analysis of the structures for evaluating their stability and designing retrofit interventions;
  • enhancing the structural heritage through the investigation of the local archives and the creation of a database dedicated to the structures.
