Graduated with honors in Geological Sciences in 1993 from the University of Naples Federico II. He earned a PhD in Earth Sciences in 1999 from the University of Bari. Since 2001, he has been a researcher at the CNR International Institute of Federico II Studies, and since 2023, he has served as Senior Researcher, geologist, and geoarchaeologist at the CNR ISPC.
His research activities over a 30-year career have focused on natural and anthropogenic hazards and risk factors, aimed at safeguarding and conserving settlements and the historical and monumental heritage of the Mediterranean area. He focuses on geomorphological and quantitative geomorphic processes, the impact of climate change, geological and geomorphological mapping, water resource protection, soil erosion, the conservation of historical and archaeological sites, geoarchaeology and pedology, ancient roads, the census and cataloging of historical-rural structures and hydraulic works, the enhancement of degraded areas, geosites and geotourism, and the development of scientific museums. Qualified to teach at the University level in Applied Geology, Physical Geography, and Geomorphology since 2013. Adjunct Professor of Geoarchaeology and Pedology at the School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage in Lecce from 2019 to present. He taught at the University of Basilicata: Pedology from 2019 to 2023 in the three-year degree course in Forestry and Environmental Sciences; Paleontology and Paleoecology from 2007 to 2012; and Physical Geography and Geomorphology from 2006 to 2008 in the Bachelor's Degree Program for Cultural Heritage Operators.
He is a member of the Teaching Board of the Doctorate in Agricultural, Forestry, and Food Sciences and Technologies at the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, Food, and Environmental Sciences (DAFE) of the University of Basilicata, from the XXXI to the 41st cycle. He has been a member of the Council of the D. Adamesteanu School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage at the University of Salento in Lecce since April 2020. He is an elected member of the Scientific Council of the CNR Department of Cultural Heritage and of the ISPC Board.
Since 2004, he has been the director and scientific coordinator of numerous funded national research projects related to landslides and triggering factors, natural and anthropogenic risks, geological and geomorphological mapping and cartography, geostatistical analysis, the protection of historical and archaeological sites in Southern Italy and the Mediterranean, the enhancement of degraded areas and geotourism, and landscape and cultural landscape protection.
He has held various institutional roles, including member of the Institute Council (formerly IBAM); ISPC contact person for the coordination of activities within the Italian Faro Network and related relations with the Venice Office of the Council of Europe; CNR representative on the Strategic Steering Committee of the Framework Agreement between the CNR and the European University Centre for Cultural Heritage of Ravello, and various other positions representing the CNR.
He is the author of 200 scientific publications in journals, conference proceedings, monographs, and miscellanies. He serves as a reviewer for over 50 international journals; he has been a member of the scientific editorial boards and book series editor since 2024 of the Earth Science Series, published by IntechOpen Limited, Great Portland Street, London.
