Professional profile

Archaeologist | Ancient and Medieval Topography | Agricultural biodiversity in history

Archaeologist (Ancient and Medieval Topography). The scientific fields of relevance are Topography (Classical and Medieval) and Archaeology (Christian and Medieval), with specific expertise in the material, cultural, and environmental changes that occurred from the 3rd to the 11th centuries, in Italy and the Mediterranean context. Territorial research (urban and rural topographical frameworks), with particular focus on the central Apennine Italy (Lazio, Umbria, Marche, Tuscany) and southern Italy (Basilicata, Campania), is complited by the exploration of rural Cultural Heritage, both tangible, intangible, and living (plant-based).

The genetic and historical analysis of cultivated species (grapevine and olive) intersects, integrates, and is enriched by archaeological evidence, textual sources (archival and documentary), cartographic, epigraphic, and linguistic sources, as well as the recovery of forms and contents (environmental and human) of historic rural landscapes, agricultural practices, and traditional knowledge. This particular type of research, carried out individually, in collaboration with universities, and coordinating a mixed CNR and CREA group, maintains and encourages dialogue and exchange among Historical, Archaeological, Anthropological, Agricultural, and Biological disciplines. The direct integration of the related data has led to success in the recovery and protection of historical agricultural biodiversity and the related cultivation methods, with inscription in the appropriate registers and the application of geographical indication and designation of origin labels.

The scientific production currently includes 250 titles, as monographs, collaboratively written volumes, articles in national and international journals, contributions (essays) in volumes, encyclopedia entries, edited works, bibliographic reviews, reviews, cartographic elaborations, exhibition panels and posters, popular articles, videos, documentaries, animations, technical dossiers (co-creator of varieties). They are integral parts of research, teaching, professional training, and editorial work (from composition to publication of volumes) of a scientific nature (direction of the international series Notebooks on Medieval Topography and Young Lukanian Archaeologists), but else technical and popular.
