My current research topics are:
- Late Roman and Medieval Archaeology of the Mediterranean Basin (particularly South Italy and Sicily), focused on material culture and trade networks, urban history, rural settlements and socio-economic organization;
- Remote Sensing and Digital Representation of Architecture and Landscape (in collaboration with other colleagues).
I am currently co-director with Rosa Lanteri (Syracuse Archaeological Park) of research activities at the archaeological sites of Monte Casale – Kasmenai and Santa Lucia di Mendola, and with Alessandra Castorina (Superintendency of Syracuse) of research activities in the territory of Megara Hyblaea (Augusta, Melilli, Priolo Gargallo and Sortino).
Between 2016 and 2018 I was Head of CNR IBAM Research Unit (URT) at Bagheria (PA). In 2020-23 I coordinated the ICNR ISPC Activity in Favignana (Trapani) within the project “IDEHA – Innovazioni per l'elaborazione dei dati nel settore del Patrimonio Culturale” (PON Program “Ricerca e Competitività 2014-2020)”. I was Principal Investigator of the italian-belgian Joint Archaeological Laboratory ‘ROMA – Roman baths archaeological, cOnservation and heritage MAnagement’ at Sagalassos, Turkey (CNR Fund, 2015-2016) and the “Context Project”, an institutional CNR research projects on Mediterranean material culture, archaeological context and cultural landscape (2016-2018). From 2015 to 2018, I participated in IBAM-CNR research activities for the “Roman Sicily Project” on Roman material culture in Sicily, and from 2009 to 2016. I participated at the "CASR Project - African Ceramics in Roman Sicily. Status quaestionis, methodologies and research paths’ (Centre Camille Jullian" - Université de Provence/CNRS and CNR IBAM, PI. M. Bonifay and D. Malfitana). I coordinated archaeological activity of the CNR IBAM project in Valle dell'Aci and Catania within the project “NEPTIS - ICT based solutions for augmented fruition and exploration of Cultural Heritage”. In 2015 I coordinated CNR IBAM research within the ‘PROVACI Project’ in order to develop sustainable methodologies and techniques for the seismic protection, valorisation and fruition of cultural heritage of archaeological site of Occhiolà (Catania).
