Marco Bettelli is an archaeologist specializing in Prehistory and Protohistory. He obtained both his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees at Sapienza University of Rome, with his doctoral thesis focusing on the relationships between the Aegean and Central Mediterranean during the Late Bronze Age. His post-doctoral research continued in the same field, particularly examining Italian-style pottery and bronzework found in Mycenaean and Late Minoan contexts.

He has directed numerous archaeological projects and excavations in southern Italy and currently oversees projects in central Italy (Marche and Umbria) as well as the Aeolian Islands. These projects form part of the broader research initiative “Steps towards the formation of complex societies in ancient Italy: from Bronze Age villages to the proto-urban centers in the Early Iron Age. Central and Southern Italy”, conducted at the Institute of Heritage Science (CNR ISPC) in Rome.

He serves on the editorial boards of several archaeological journals, acts as a peer reviewer for national and international publications, and co-directs the CNR ISPC series Incunabula Graeca. From 2003 to 2023, he was Professor of Palethnology and European Protohistory at the Postgraduate School of Archaeology, University of Basilicata (Matera). Since 2023, he has been Professor of Aegean Archaeology and Protohistory of Mediterranean Europe at Sapienza University of Rome and is a member of the Academic Group of the Ph.D. program in Cultural Heritage (PASAP Med) at the University of Bari.
