Description
The "Monumental Nymphaeum" project focuses on the architectural heritage of Tripolis, an important city located in southern Lydia.
The city of Tripolis ad Maeandrum played a key role at the crossroads of the Lykos and Maeander rivers from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine period. Since 2012, the city has been the object of excavations and restorations by the Archaeological Mission of the Pamukkale University (Tripolis Kazısı), directed by Prof. Dr. Bahadır Duman. The Italian Project, directed by Tommaso Ismaelli (CNR SPC), is aimed at the study, restoration and anastylosis of the Monumental Nymphaeum (2nd-5th century AD), one of the main public buildings of the Lydian city.
Set up as a joint archaeological laboratory between the two countries, Italy and Turkey, and funded during the two-year period 2019-2021 by the CNR, the 'Monumental Nymphaeum' project has been officially acknowledged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) since 2022.
The activities see the joint participation of Turkish and Italian researchers, students and restorers from various institutions, universities, and research centres.

Un appuntamento longevo e consolidato di grande rilievo scientifico e di primaria importanza per la diplomazia culturale tra Italia e Turchia, riconosciuto dalle autorità dei due Paesi e dalla comunità scientifica, accademica e culturale a livello internazionale. Una occasione per mettere a confronto i risultati degli scavi e delle ricerche effettuate sul campo dagli archeologi italiani che, insieme ai colleghi turchi, operano nell’immenso patrimonio disseminato in tutto il territorio turco.
In questa occasione, sono stati presentati i risultati delle attività condotte nell’ambito del Laboratorio archeologico congiunto. Inoltre, nel 2022 il Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale (MAECI) ha garantito al progetto il riconoscimento istituzionale, inserendolo tra le Missioni ufficialmente riconosciute.
