Professional profile

Geologist I Conservation Scientist | Architectural Stone Heritage | Earthen Vernacular Heritage

I have a degree in Geological Sciences and started out as an archaeo metallurgist. Subsequently, when I began my training as a research fellow and then, from 2008, as a researcher at the CNR in Florence, I began to work on natural and artificial stone materials in historical, monumental and vernacular architecture and archaeological sites, both for research purposes and for conservation.

Over more than two decades, I have addressed various research topics related to these materials. Among these, those that have proved most relevant to the skills I have acquired and my interests in the region's built heritage are those concerning the use of stone materials as building materials in relation to the resources of the territory, its historical evolution and technological progress.

Over the last 15 years, thanks to collaborations with Italian and foreign universities, both with independent researches and within national and international projects, I have developed a passion for vernacular architecture, particularly earthen architecture, both in terms of construction techniques and conservation interventions.

Another line of research that I have been pursuing since my time as a research fellow concerns the development of micro-destructive techniques for assessing the surface cohesion characteristics of stone materials. The techniques I use to study stone materials are those of classical applied petrography, which, if necessary, are combined with those of diagnostics for conservation purposes, both in situ and in the laboratory. Over the years, I have participated in numerous European, national and regional projects and have published numerous articles in journals, book chapters and conference proceedings.
