Before teaching ancient topography at the University of Florence, Liverani directed the department of Classical antiquities at the Vatican Museums for twenty years, also heading the laboratory for the restoration of stone materials and mosaics. He initiated research into the ancient polychromy of marble sculpture, organising an exhibition (2003) and two international conferences (2015, 2022).
