Archaeologist | Ancient Topography | Remote Sensing Specialist | Digital Heritage Specialist
Landscape archaeologist and photo interpreter. His studies began with the archaeology of the Roman Provinces (Master's Degree – University of Pisa) and continued with the archaeology of the mountainous landscapes of Crete (PhD – University of Foggia). He is an active member of international remote sensing communities and organises workshops and summer schools for young researchers, teaching in the classroom and tutoring in flight. His interests range from historical aerial photography to the documentation, study and reconstruction of landscapes, monuments and ancient artefacts using laser and photogrammetry technologies (terrestrial and aerial).
Author of the free georeferencing software AutoGR-Toolkit, downloaded and used by individuals, companies, universities and research institutions around the world.
He lived for many years in Greece working at the FORTH’s Institute of Mediterranean Studies (Laboratory of Geophysical, Satellite Remote Sensing and ArchaeoEnvironment).
He recently held the position of scientific director of the ICCD-National Aerial Photographic Archive and has a strong ongoing collaborative relationship with the same institution. He collaborates with Italian and foreign universities on courses in remote sensing, photo interpretation and digital documentation of cultural heritage. He is currently involved as PI, research unit manager or promoter in various projects in Italy and abroad (Greece, Morocco, Lebanon, Slovenia).
