Call for papers on protecting cultural heritage from natural hazards by Springer Nature’s Discover Applied Sciences journal
Submission deadline: 30 June 2026
The call for papers “Protecting cultural heritage from natural hazards: methodologies and technologies” is now open in the multi-disciplinary open access journal Discover Applied Sciences by Springer Nature.
Cultural heritage is the legacy of the past, a living link between history and the present, and useful in understanding today and preparing the ground for a better future. It is evidence of human activity over centuries and irreplaceable in understanding our history and our identity.
However, cultural heritage is a vulnerable, non-renewable, and irreplaceable resource, menaced by natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, and floods. Furthermore, the increasing recurrence of unnatural disasters, caused by climate change, compromise cultural heritage in a critical manner. So, effective protection needs the use of cutting-edge methodologies capable of linking the conservation of culture and up-to-date methods of disaster risk management.
This Collection is proposed as a platform for contributions providing advanced methodologies for assessing hazard and vulnerability, predictive models for risk assessment, and protocols for monitoring and coping with emergencies, mitigating, and restoring cultural heritage exposed to natural hazards. Special attention will be reserved for the integration, in formally designed methodological schemes, of digital technologies for documentation and diagnostic, such as 3D surveying, laser scanning, photogrammetry, satellite and UAV remote sensing, GIS, artificial intelligence, and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). The aim is for science, technology, and governance to be useful in sparking a dialogue, promoting the sharing of practices capable of increasing resilience, and ensuring the handing down to future generations in a responsible and assured way.
