Description
The international and transdisciplinary Bisenzio project aims to carry out a systematic investigation of the archaeological site located on Monte Bisenzio, a promontory along the southwestern shore of Lake Bolsena, within the modern municipality of Capodimonte in the province of Viterbo (Italy).
Through the use of non-invasive methods, such as surface archaeological surveys, geophysical prospection, remote sensing, and targeted invasive techniques, including core sampling and limited excavation in both emerged and submerged areas of the lake, combined with the study of previously recovered contexts and archival data, the Bisenzio project seeks to outline a long-term and comprehensive historical framework.
Its ultimate goal is to provide an in-depth interpretation that considers both cultural evidence (habitation and burial contexts, defensive structures, road networks) and environmental data (vegetation evolution, cultivated species, wild and domestic fauna), restoring to history one of the most significant crossroads of inland southern Etruria.
