Special Issue of “Applied Sciences” by MDPI on advanced pigment and binder characterization

Now online the Special Issue “Advanced Analytical Techniques for Pigment and Binder Characterization”, directed by Giulia Germinario (CNR ISPC), within the open access Journal Applied Sciences by MDPI.

Pigments and binders are fundamental components of coatings, paints, polymers, cultural heritage materials, and many industrial formulations, directly influencing their performance, durability, and esthetic properties.

Modern analytical techniques are transforming our understanding of complex material systems. High-resolution, multimodal, and non-destructive methods currently make it possible to probe pigments, binders, and additives with unprecedented precision, revealing not only their intrinsic chemical and structural nature, but also the subtle interactions that govern their stability, performance, and appearance. Recent studies have revealed dynamic processes such as curing, phase transitions, or aging mechanisms, while chemometrics and machine learning enhance the interpretation of complex datasets. Together, these approaches illuminate the degradation pathways that were previously inaccessible, offering essential insights for both the design of next-generation formulations and the preservation of cultural heritage.

This Special Issue will bring together state-of-the-art research focused on the application and development of advanced analytical techniques for pigment and binder characterization.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • High-resolution spectroscopic, chromatographic, and microscopic methods for structural and compositional analysis.
  • Multimodal and correlative techniques enabling deeper insights into pigment–binder interactions.
  • Correlative approaches to pigment–binder interactions.
  • Micro and non-destructive approaches for monitoring chemical, physical, and aging processes.
  • Data-driven and computational strategies (chemometrics, machine learning) for the interpretation of complex analytical datasets.

By gathering contributions from leading experts across the fields of chemistry, materials science, cultural heritage, and related disciplines, this Special Issue aims to highlight emerging methodologies, foster interdisciplinary dialog, and advance the analytical frontiers of pigment and binder research.
